“when she wishes, she wishes for less ways to wish for, more ways to work toward it…” -Metric, IOU
Today begins the first leg of a long journey. Or, perhaps it’s just a new chapter in a journey I’ve been taking my whole life. You see, for the past twenty-something years, I’ve been fascinated with the world of technology. I started writing software when I was nine years old, and began exploring hacking and security as a sophomore in high school. I’ve been exploring these passions ever since, but never before made the attempt at turning them into a career. There was always that little, disparaging voice, telling me I wasn’t good enough, that I’d never amount to more than a casual hobbyist.
So I pursued other careers, relegating my computer skills to the realm of pet projects and passing curiosity. All the while, continuing to be drawn back in by the alluring call of my true passion, my deep fascination with the “world of the electron and the switch, the beauty of the baud.” I’ve continued programming and exploring security, often foregoing sleep and food in pursuit of just one more line of code, one more bug fix, one more commit.
Well, after all this time, I’ve finally decided to throw in the towel and give up. I can no longer fight my nature; it’s time I accept my fate and embrace the challenge before me. I’m going to make my hobby my profession and become the hacker I’ve always wanted to be. It will be difficult, and will surely test my dedication and strength of will. But nothing worthwhile comes easy.
Join me, if you will, and allow me to share my journey with you. On this site I will share the stories and knowledge that I gain through my endeavours, in the hopes that someone out there will find it useful or interesting (or both). At the very least, I’ll have a journal of my own path through these uncharted waters; one that I can hopefully look back upon with fondness once I’ve achieved my goals.
Wish me luck!
