This section is specific to the hardware I’m using. If you’re going to use a different WiFi Access Point, the instructions may differ.

The next step requires us to connect to the OPNsense LAN port. To do this, we can simply plug the laptop into the enp2s0f0 port via ethernet, but instead let’s configure the Wireless Access Point, then use it to connect to the virtual router.

  1. Plug the Access Point into the ‘net. (Give it a working WAN.)
  2. Turn on the Access Point. It’s currently in router mode.
  3. Connect to it. NETGEAR-1 :: sharedsecret
  4. The captive portal will guide through setup.
    • If no portal opens, open a browser and go to http://www.routerlogin.net

Use the following information:

  • Admin Account Settings
    • Username: admin
    • Password: replaceme (pick your own)
    • Security Questions: Choose your own.
  • Click Next
  • Create (or log into) your Netgear account.

Once you’re into the AP configuration menu:

  1. Setup > Wireless Setup
    • Change SSID to hal9k-wifi
    • Security Options: WPA-PSK [AES] with passphrase accessgranted
    • Apply changes, then connect to the new SSID.
    • Use traceroute to find the router IP again.
  2. Advanced Setup > Advanced Wireless Settings: WPS Settings
    • Disable Access Point/Router’s PIN
  3. Advanced Setup > Wireless Access Point
    • Enable Access Point Mode.
    • Get IP from existing router.
    • Click Apply.

Once the changes are applied, turn off the AP, unplug it from the ‘net, and plug it into the enp2s0f0 port on hal9k. Then turn the AP back on, and give it a moment to get its bearings.
